I’m pretty sure most of you are tracking the news on WordPress. I’d like to turn your attention to the WordPress RSSCloud news and the latest worm attack on WordPress powered blogs.
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, it is the way your readers subscribe to updates of your blog using clients like Google Reader or Bloglines. I’m pretty sure most of you know what RSS is. And I’m pretty sure most of you know that it takes from minutes to hours for a new post to reach your subscriber through RSS. Well, now it won’t any more. WordPress has announced that those users subscribed to RSS Readers which are using a new feature called RSSCloud (only River2 and LazyFeed for now) will get instant updates. Thus, WordPress becomes a little bit more real time now.
I’m very curios what will come out of this new technology. Will Twitter lose its popularity now? Will there appear new promotional technologies and marketing mixes? Will WordPress gain even bigger popularity now, even with more security breaches and worms threatening your blog?
By the way, have you already updated to the latest WordPress security release? Please do it immediately. And check if you’ve done everything to protect your WordPress blog.

All the features described in my previous post are still there: improved plugin search and widget user interface, per page option for plugins, more than one gallery at a page etc. The most notable feature of the new WordPress seems to be the ability to browse themes within the Dashboard. WordPress 2.8 Beta
May 21st, 2009
It always amazes me how extremely fast WordPress is innovated and updated, it’s not a wonder that it’s the most popular blogging platform these days. The WordPress version 2.7 is still new and fresh and seems to be released only yesterday, but here we have the version 2.8 all ready. Well, not that ready as it is still a beta version, though I think many of you would still appreciate it.
So, what the new version has for us, the WordPress addicts? Here is a list of the main improvements and innovations of WordPress 2.8 beta:
The Admin icons are improved along with the plugin search and widget user interface. Among new options is a description field for tags and per page option for plugins, besides the new version supports more than one gallery at the same page and there is a great new option of autosaving post/page when pressing Control/Command+S. The new WordPress won’t ask you for confirmation when marking a comment as spam, won’t notify you of your own comments if you are a post author and will allow case-insensitive logins.
The full list of the new and improved features of version 2.8 is here.
This update is great, but still a beta, thus be careful because beta versions usually have many bugs.

WordPress template tags and a small announcement
March 31st, 2009
Running a blog for a while you eventually come to a desire to change something in your theme. Show tags as well as categories, change the format the date is displayed in, these and alike small changes can easily be done with WordPress tags. A template tag is a php code that tells WordPress to “do” or “get” something, but you do not have to be a coder to use Templates tags.
These tags are extremely simple to use and very well documented at wordpress.org. Basically, if you want your title to be shown put “”, and you will get the task done.
Read carefully the documentation at the link above, it is clearly explained there. The most used template tags are:
- the_title() - outputs the title
- the_permalink - outputs the posts permalink, used with “the_title” usually
- the_content() - displays the post body
- the_category() - displays the categories you put the post in
- the_tags() - shows the tags of the post
- the_author - outputs the name of the post author
- the_author_url - outputs the link to the author’s page, usually used in a link with “the_author”
There are many more of them listed and explained at the wordpress.org. So go ahead and make your blog template more personal.
And in conclusion I have a little announcement here:
WordPress is participating in the Google Summer of Code for the third year in a raw and encourages college students to apply. There are 3 days left for you to roll in, the deadline is April 3, 2009. Check out WordPress Codex GSoC2009 page for more info and FAQ. There also are some projects suggested. To apply go to the Google Summer of Code application site.
